Armed Robber die in shootoutThe Police on Monday shot dead, an armed robber who was part of a robbery gang that attacked commuters on the Hwidiem-Acherensua highway in the Brong Ahafo Region.


The police have also picked up a woman believed to be a close associate of the dead armed robber to help in their investigations.


According to the Brong Ahafo Regional Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Christopher Tawiah, the police had a tip-off from a driver of a Hyundai bus with registration number AS 3437-12, that 10 men, all armed with weapons stopped his vehicle and robbed him of an unspecified amount of money.


The police hurried to the scene and spotted the robbers at the far end of the road robbing other people.


On seeing the police, the robbers took to their heels and opened fire on them while the police returned fire. In the shootout, one of them was arrested.


When the police searched him, they found 28 rounds of ammunitions, a locally made double barrel pistol and an unspecified amount of money.


Not enthused that one of their own had been apprehended, he said, the robbers continued to engage the police in gun battle and in the process, their arrested colleague got hit and died. They then scattered into the bush while the police pursued them.


The body of the deceased has been deposited at the Goaso Government Hospital for identification and autopsy.


Meanwhile, a lady, Evelyn Asante, 30, who was allegedly seen in the company of the deceased prior to the robbery, had been picked up by the police to help in investigations.


According to ASP Tawiah, 13 used ammunitions were found at the scene of the crime, and some volunteers of Hwidiem and its environs are frantically helping the police to apprehend the robbers.


“The regional police command is calling for total co-operation of the general public to help check crime in the region,” he said.
