The Sunyani Municipal Council of Labour of the Ghana Trades Union Congress has declared its unflinching support for Organized Labour on the 10-day ultimatum issued to the Public Utilities and Regulatory Commission (PURC) and the Government to stay the implementation of the new utility tariffs.

The Council noted that the recent astronomical increases in water and electricity tariffs would worsen the plight of Ghanaian workers and their defendants.

The Council, in a resolution passed by the Council during its meeting last Thursday in Sunyani, said, “Sunyani Municipal Council of Labour is in agreement with the press statement issued by Organised Labour and pledge our unflinching support to any action that may be declared in the near future.”

The resolution, signed by the Regional Chairman, Jacob Bofah, Municipal Chairman, Ebenezer Fordjour and his Secretary, Alfred Tetteh and other officials, was forwarded to the Secretary General of the TUC, Brong Ahafo Regional Coordinating Director, Regional Police Commander and the Sunyani Municipal Chief Executive.

They resolved that the increases in electricity and water tariffs by the PURC should be in three phases from 2013, 2014 and 2015 as proposed by Organised Labour.

They also asked the government to stay the implementation of the new tariffs and dialogue with all stakeholders, urging PURC to adhere to the automatic tariff adjustment formula, which was agreed upon by all stakeholders in 2010.

The Sunyani Municipal Council of Labour said prices of petroleum products had been increased about five times with cumulative increases of about 30 percent in 2013, saying any further increases in water and electricity tariffs would worsen the predicament of the ordinary Ghanaian worker.
