Man shot dead, wife gang raped by armed robbers

A 42-year old seaman has been shot dead by unknown assailants, believed to be armed robbers, who also raped his wife at New York, Zenu, near Ashaiman.

The deceased, Richard Ayiyi, had returned from sea in Cote d’Ivoire, two days before the unfortunate incident occurred last Sunday at his residence.

Three men, who were wielding locally manufactured pistols, shot Richard in the chest before smashing his head repeatedly with an iron bar until he fell unconscious and died later.

Richard and his wife, a 38-year-old drinking spot operator, were reported to have returned from the call of nature at a nearby bush in the area only for them to be accosted by the masked assailants who marched them to their house.

The suspected armed robbers collected from the couple an unspecified amount of foreign currencies in an envelope, including an amount meant for a friend’s wife.

Richard confronted the robbers after the latter had collected the money. But one of the robbers pulled a knife to stab him while the other robber shot him from another direction.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Emmanuel Tetteh Yankah, Ashaiman District Crime Officer, who confirmed the incident to DAILY GUIDE said on October 20, at about 11:00pm, police received report about a robbery incident at the New York area.

According to him, the deceased and his wife attended the call of nature at a nearby bush and on their return, they were waylaid by three young men wielding locally manufactured pistols and knife.

He explained further that the robbers marched them to their room where they demanded for money, adding that the husband complied and went in to bring the money in an envelope.

ASP Yankah noted that the Richard, after bringing the money, engaged one of the robbers in a struggle and in the process another robber shot him while the other stabbed him with a knife.

He indicated that the third robber used an iron bar to strike Richard’s head repeatedly which made him fall unconscious.

One of the robbers, according to the District Police Crime Officer, out of anger, raped the deceased’s wife after which they fled.

Richard’s body was later taken to the Police Hospital morgue in Accra for autopsy.
