The Acting Executive Director of the Ghana National Service Scheme (GNSS), Alhaji Alhassan Imoro, has inspected the Scheme’s agricultural projects in the Brong Ahafo, Northern and Ashanti Regions.

He also used his visits to the regions to assess how national service persons posted to the regions were doing, especially after the deployment of over 70,000 national service persons across the country.

The four-day cross-country tour took Alhaji Imoro and his entourage to Branam in the Wenchi District of the Brong Ahafo Region where the Scheme had cultivated 200 acres of maize.

At Damango in the Northern Region, the maize farm covers 184 acres, while the Ejura farm in the Ashanti Region has 300 acres of maize.

All the farms are at various stages of harvesting and are expected to produce high yield by the end of the season.

The various GNSS Regional Directors who toured their respective regions noted generally that, about 80 percent of service persons posted for the 2013/2014 had taken up their postings and settled.

Alhaji Imoro expressed satisfaction for the regional postings so far and urged other service persons who had not yet reported for their national service to do so.

He commended national service persons who had accepted postings to the GNSS agricultural projects and urged them to use the period of their national service to learn practical agricultural activities to augment whatever theories they may have acquired from their various colleges of agriculture.

“This is an opportunity for you to put into practice what you learnt from school,” he stated. He said the Scheme was considering going into soya bean cultivation in Ejura and palm plantation in other parts of the Ashanti Region.

At Damango, the Acting Executive Director and his entourage defied the one-and-a-half hours of heavy downpour and inspected the farm.

He noted that even though the Damango maize farm is the latest addition, it was doing very well.

He expressed the Scheme’s gratitude to the agricultural officers in the district for their technical assistance towards the success of the project.

While in Kumasi, Alhaji Imoro paid a courtesy call on the Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister, Samuel Yaw Adusei who commended the Scheme for its agricultural projects across the country, especially in Ejura.

He said the vision of the government is to provide enough jobs for the youth through projects such as agriculture. He therefore commended the Scheme for taking advantage of the government’s youth in agriculture programme to introduce the youth into agriculture.

Mr Adusei expressed the gratitude of the Ashanti Regional Co-ordinating Council to the GNSS for its successful Ejura project. He assured the Scheme of the government’s continuous support to its agricultural projects and other activities in other parts of the country.

He also urged service personnel to use the period of their national service to explore other avenues of employment after their national service, especially in the area of agriculture.
