Egypt are in an impossible position in the World Cup playoffs
Egypt assistant coach Diaa El-Sayed says it will be too much an ask of the players to overturn the humiliating 6-1 deficit suffered against Ghana in the World Cup playoffs.
The record African Cup winners require a miracle to qualify for their first World Cup since 1990 following their humiliating defeat in the first leg of the playoffs against the Black Stars.
The North Africans who had their 100 percent record in the series smashed by the impressive Ghana team in Kumasi are keeping to a faint hopes of qualification to next year’s World Cup in Brazil.
But assistant coach El-Sayed believes the main focus going into next month’s second leg is to work towards salvaging any pride left for the Pharaohs before re-igniting the hopes of World Cup qualification.
“We are looking to restore pride in the second leg,” El-Sayed said.
“We cannot ask the players to score five goals in the second leg. We asked them to play football and restore pride after the humiliating defeat.”
Egypt continue to insist the second leg match will take place in Cairo despite rising safety concerns due to political and social unrest.
