Don’t join "illegal" strike: GNAT tells its members

Don’t join The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has warned its members against taking part in the strike declared by the Coalition of Concerned Teachers.

The group, with over fifty thousand members, is striking over the failure of government to pay its members’ incremental credit arrears, capitation grant, and car maintenance allowances amongst others.

They are accusing the president of reneging on a promise to resolve their concerns.

GNAT general secretary Awotwi Nkansah said the group; CCT has no clout and should not be recognized

“…where were the concerned teachers when both GNAT and NAGRAT were making the demands earlier this year?”

Asking their members to trust in their system, Awotwi Nkansah said GNAT has confidence in the government’s commitment toward resolving their outstanding issues.

“We have spoken to the government and we have assurance they will pay the arrears by the end of the month, so if the concerned teacher want to strike, they should. We are only telling our members not to join in the action.”

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education has described as illegal the strike action by members of the coalition of concerned teachers of Ghana. The Ministry’s Spokesperson, Paul Krampahhas told XYZ News the aggrieved teachers have not engaged the ministry and the various stakeholders over their concerns before taking this action.
