Two security personnel steal BOST oil

The suspects with the evidence behind them after their arrest

Security personnel attached to the Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company Ltd (BOST), Accra Plains Depot at Kpone near Tema, have been rounded up by the Kpone District Police last Monday in connection with oil stealing at the company.

The two security personnel are Kofi Abotsi, 36, and Sena Kwao, 30, both residents of Kakasunaka Number 2 and Gbetsile respectively, all in the Kpone-Katamanso District in Accra.

The suspects, who are workers of Vizico Security Limited, a private security company in Accra, were arrested while, with the aid of yet-to-be identified persons, siphoning oil from the BOST strategic located oil pipelines. The suspects were at the security post that night when police chanced on them with their accomplices, who, however, managed to escape upon seeing the police.

Police retrieved 12 gallons filled with petroleum products and a rubber hose, deepening suspicion that they might have been used to connect the pipelines to siphon the product into the gallons.

The Tema Regional Police on August 18, 2013 apprehended six oil siphoning syndicate for allegedly stealing barrels of petroleum products from the same BOST pipelines to enrich themselves.

The six were believed to have been assisted by some yet-to-be identified security personnel who had since the arrest of the six, quit their jobs with the company. This has raised serious concerns about the integrity of the security men at the company who are suspected to be engaging in criminal activities.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Abraham Ayisine, Kpone District Police Commander, briefed DAILY GUIDE that his outfit, as a result of rampant stealing of petroleum products from the BOST pipelines, decided to detail some police officers to monitor criminal activities on the pipelines.

According to him, on October 20, 2013 at about 10:45 the deployed policemen spotted some persons illegally siphoning fuel from the company’s pipelines, adding that police quickly rushed to the scene and saw about five persons including the security men.

He noted that the other culprits managed to scale the company fence wall and bolted upon seeing the police, leaving the security guards and the exhibit at the scene. They were picked up by the police and brought to the police station.

DSP Ayisine mentioned that the police were making all efforts to get the escapees arrested. He, therefore, sounded a word of caution to security persons at the company who might be engaging in such criminal acts to desist since the police would not hesitate to arrest such persons and make them face the full rigours of the law.

He mentioned that the arrested persons would be arraigned when investigations into the matter are completed.
